ICD-10 Delayed until October, 2015
On April 1st, 2014, President Obama signed a bill delaying the next-generation healthcare coding structure, ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases - Tenth Revision).
The ICD-10 implementation, originally planned for October 2014, was pushed back at least one full year.
ICD-10 updates bring over 68,000 available diagnosis codes, which is a substantial increase from the 13,000 used with ICD-9. These new codes will add more detail to patient
diagnoses and refine reimbursement rates. The goal of ICD-10 is to improve healthcare industry operational processes in order to promote coding accuracy and streamline payments.
Some professionals are going as far as to suggest ICD-10 be skipped altogether and wait for any transition until ICD-11 is in place. Although there are executives that are upset
about the decision, many remain hopeful and positive, discussing the opportunity for additional 'practice' and improvements within their facility.
The details of this bill "prohibits CMS from enforcing a mandate to switch from ICD-9 to ICD-10 until at least October 1st, 2015" (Modern Healthcare). The upcoming transition will impact
all healthcare payers, clearinghouses, and HIPAA-covered entities across the United States. While some feel the delay will allow more 'breathing room' to healthcare providers who were not
prepared to transition this October, it comes as a costly decision to those who have invested portions of their budget to meet the original October 2014 deadline.
